Nursing Sleep Bra You Can Sew, Blessed Designs
Nursing bras form the core of your breastfeeding wardrobe. Choosing the right ones from the numerous options available will help ensure your breastfeeding success.

Nursing bras are absolutely essential to your comfort and convenience when breastfeeding. They give support as your body is changing, while providing your baby access to breastfeed. Below is a brief guide on how to buy and choose nursing bras.

When and How Many?

You should have at least three nursing bras before you even give birth. Shop for your size when you're 7 or 8 months pregnant so you'll have a few nursing bras to begin with. Shop for a few more nursing bras a couple of weeks after birth, when your milk has come in.

Aim to have enough nursing bras to use in between doing the laundry. Therefore, the more often you do laundry, the fewer nursing bras you'll need. Remember, that you'll be changing nursing bras more often than usual because of leaks, especially in the first few months of breastfeeding.

What Size?

Your bra band size during the last trimester of pregnancy is usually accurate. Most nursing bras have adjustable or stretchy chest bands so they will still fit even if you should continue to expand. Expect to go up at least one cup size larger than your pre-pregnant bra size.

Which Style?

Hook or snap: Most nursing bras have a hook or snap that enables you to drop down the front cup of the bra to breastfeed. Generally, a hook is easier to manage than a snap. Whichever one you choose, make sure you can undo the hook or snap with only one hand, as you'll be needing the other hand to hold your baby.

Underwire: Some women think that an underwire is necessary for support. However, underwires can cause plugged ducts in some breastfeeding women. Try a non-wired nursing bra first and see if it gives enough support. Otherwise, use wired nursing bras only in the daytime and not at night -- and make sure that they fit you perfectly.

Soft cup sleep bra: Nursing sleep bras are made of very stretchy fabric, such as microfiber. To breastfeed, you simply push the bra cup aside, latch baby on, and go back to sleep. Many have inside pockets to hold nursing pads in place. Non-nursing bras made of soft, stretchy fabric also work, but will not hold nursing pads. You'll need at least a couple of sleep bras. Some women use nursing sleep bras even in the daytime because they don't like to mess with snaps or hooks when breastfeeding a baby. If you sew, you could make your own nursing sleep bra with a pattern from Blessed Designs.

Camisole: Another useful style is the nursing camisole. This is a close-fitting tank top with a built-in shelf bra and nursing access. By wearing this underneath regular clothing, you can breastfeed easily and discreetly. It will keep your tummy covered too. It turns your regular clothes into breastfeeding clothes! Popular nursing camisoles include the Corsierre Nursing Tank by Blissful Babes and the Nursing Bra Tank by Glamourmom.

Strapless.: A strapless nursing bra may be difficult to find, but is increasingly more available. Moms in Mind, a Singaporean company, was one of the first to sell strapless breastfeeding bras. La Leche League recently began selling a strapless nursing bra as well. You'll want a strapless nursing bra when wearing tank tops and other summer styles.

Pumping: If you will be pumping breastmillk, consider buying a few hands-free pumping bra. The most popular ones are by La Leche League and Easy Expression pumping bras in either halter or bustier style. Or, you could try this trick using elastics, which helps you pump hands-free from any hook-style nursing bra.

If you want to breastfeed comfortably, you'll need several nursing bras. Choose the styles that fit your lifestyle and body type. By having the right nursing bras, your breastfeeding experience will be more convenient, discreet and pleasurable.
